Obesity

Obesity is a pathological condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of fat in the animal. It is called overweight when the animal has up to 20% above the ideal weight and obesity when exceeds the 20%.
The obesity can be caused by endocrine problems and/or environmental factors, such as a sedentary lifestyle and a wrong diet.

The lifestyle of the people in the urban centers has been a huge medicine concern and one of the major causes of diseases in humans. The urban centers` animals suffer from stress and sedentary lifestyle as well, and that have become one of the principal concern in veterinary.

The worry about the career, the decline of the house size, the lack of leisure time have resulted in the reduction of the family size. That scenario makes people look for pets as companion. Likewise people the animals suffer from the problems of modern life, because of the lack of exercise and overfeeding.

Canine obesity is one of the main consequences of the kind of relationship between humans and animals. A few decades ago, dogs were required in activities such as herding, hunting and guard. Nowadays they have became "couch fellows", with too many people around and no animals for social life (in pack). That happens because most of the people just have one dog and no space for exercise, the animals only go out for the petshop and for a small walk around the block.

The sedentary lifestyle leads to canine obesity and the consequences are:
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides increased
  • Pancreatitis
  • Locomotor and joint problems
  • Diabetes
  • Lipemia in cats
  • Cardio-respiratory problems
  • Liver problems
